Modern-Day Fairy Tale

The new Snow White is Ebony Black. This 2007 incarnation of the famed fairytale princess has got the red-as-blood cheeks and the evil, vain stepmom—though hers isn't a queen, but a rich lady who lives in the Hamptons. And rather than seven dwarfs, this princess's posse includes a band of hired household help and some hipster musicians. Her handsome prince is the lead singer of a band, and her escape is not to a forest but the East Village. Heck, she probably has a MySpace profile.

Catch the full tale by taking your kids to see the new children's musical, Ebony Black, debuting tomorrow at the South Street Seaport. Laced with plenty of catchy song-and-dance numbers, it's also a way to impart little ones with a less stereotypical vision of what "fairest" means (since naturally, in the end, Ebony embraces her own intrinsic beauty). And honestly, the more familiar Snow White was long overdue for a makeover. Poison apples and wild boar's lungs and glass coffins? This version is much more likely to leave you with a happily-ever-after vibe.

When: Sat., 5/12, 5/19 & 5/26, 3pm; $10/Adults, $5/Children (reservations suggested).
Where: Seaport District Cultural Association Performing Space, southwest corner of Beekman & Front St., 212-242-6036.
